First-Year Focus Group Session Look-in

Focus groups can provide solutions or lead to wild goose chases.

In this post, I allow you to listen in on a session in which students try to reconcile their past high school academic successes with their current college underperformance. They are animated to protect their identity.

I’d love to hear your thoughts as you listen in.

My three takeaways from this clip are:

  1. Students may be honest about their experiences, but they rarely are accurate.
  2. Hard work isn’t a sufficient strategy for academic success in college.
  3. These students are caught in transition traps.

You can learn more about the transition traps in my new book by clicking here.
